Negociations proceed between the CDF Muhoozi, NMG and Patriotic League of Uganda Andrew Mwenda come to conditional agreements

Negotiations are underway to reopen Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda platforms after a high-profile intervention by Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) leader Andrew Mwenda following a military shutdown ordered by the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Current Status of the Agreements

Conditional Agreement to Reopen: Veteran journalist and PLU executive Andrew Mwenda confirmed he held discussions with Gen. Muhoozi. They agreed in principle that Daily Monitor and NTV Uganda will be allowed to reopen soon.

Management Consultations Required: The primary condition set by the PLU leadership and Gen. Muhoozi is that direct negotiations must first take place with the management of NMG Uganda before the military siege is lifted and the stations are allowed back on air.

International Allies Consultation: Gen. Muhoozi indicated on his official X handle that he is concurrently consulting with international allies in the UK and Europe regarding the reopening process.

Final Approval Pending: The ultimate decision to rescind the shutdown rests with Gen. Muhoozi’s father, President Yoweri Museveni, to whom the final results of these joint discussions will be presented for approval.

Timeline of the Crisis

June 28, 2026: Under the orders of CDF Gen. Muhoozi, security forces raided the NMG Uganda offices in Namuwongo, Kampala. They disabled newspaper printing and abruptly took NTV Uganda, Spark TV, KFM, and Dembe FM off the air.

June 29, 2026: Gen. Muhoozi asserted that the media outlets would not resume operations without his permission, stating his belief that the press should be guided by "cadres of the revolution". Later that day, Andrew Mwenda stepped in to signal the start of reopening talks.

June 30, 2026: Armed soldiers remain deployed in a heavy military siege at NMG Kampala locations. While physical offices are entirely inaccessible, NMG teams continue to publish news through their active digital and social media channels.

According to the ICT and National Guidance Minister, Justine Lumumba Kasule, the physical shutdown was prompted by a "security-led inquiry" instituted by President Museveni. The upcoming meeting between the PLU leaders, Gen. Muhoozi, and NMG management will dictate the terms under which independent broadcasting can officially resume.
