German's player Nico Schlotterbeck gets rulled out after uncle injury with Ivory coast

Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck has been officially ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. An MRI scan confirmed that the 26-year-old Borussia Dortmund center-back suffered a severe medial collateral ligament tear in his left ankle. The injury occurred during Germany's 2-1 group stage victory against Ivory Coast on Saturday, June 20, 2026. After a challenge with Amad Diallo early in the first half, Schlotterbeck remarkably played through the pain until halftime before being replaced by Antonio Rüdiger.

Key Details of the Injury

The Diagnosis: A torn medial collateral (deltoid) ligament in his left ankle.

Recovery Timeline: The German Football Association (DFB) announced he will be sidelined for several months, meaning he will also miss the start of the upcoming Bundesliga season.

Squad Status: According to strict FIFA tournament rules, Germany cannot call up a replacement player because the World Cup is already underway.

Team Presence: Head coach Julian Nagelsmann confirmed that Schlotterbeck will remain with the squad in the United States to support the team off the pitch.

Impact on Germany's World Cup Campaign

Germany has already secured the top spot in Group E and advanced to the knockout stages following back-to-back wins over Curaçao and Ivory Coast. However, losing Schlotterbeck is a heavy tactical blow. Nagelsmann highly valued the defender's exceptional ability to build up play from the back.

Germany's Defensive Outlook

Germany has already secured the top spot in Group E and advanced to the knockout stages. Coach Nagelsmann will have to rely on his deep squad depth to fill the massive void left by Schlotterbeck’s excellent back-line buildup play.
