Parliament demands deep investigation on Rugby player Star Outcry

Parliament and the Parliament Of Uganda have demanded a deep investigation and government action following the mob-killing of national rugby player Sidney Gongodyo. Gongodyo, who played for the Rugby Cranes and the Stanbic Black Pirates, was brutally beaten to death in Kampala on June 5, 2026, over allegations of stealing a handbag.

Parliamentary Intervention

The matter was brought to the floor of Parliament by Omoro County MP Andrew Ojok Oulanyah, who also serves as the Vice President of the Uganda Rugby Union.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja condemned the violence, directing the Ministry of Internal Affairs to present a detailed investigative report to the House.

Members of Parliament are requesting an expedited, fair trial for the suspects, with some calling for a public court proceeding at the scene of the crime to act as a deterrent.

Speaker of Parliament Jacob Marksons Oboth expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, noting that anyone can become a victim of mob violence.

Police Investigations and Arrests

The Uganda Police Force have intensified their hunt for the perpetrators, with over 10 suspects arrested.

Several of the arrested individuals were identified from viral social media videos that showed the brutal attack.

The police are strongly warning the public against taking the law into their own hands, stating that no allegation justifies taking a life without due legal process.

Public and Legal Response

The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has strongly condemned the murder, linking the rise in mob justice to a broader crisis of the rule of law and declining public trust in the justice system.

State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang joined in condemning the lynching and called for speedy, earnest investigations so that justice is swiftly served.

The Stanbic Black Pirates have officially retired Gongodyo's number seven jersey in his honor.
