Former Paul Kagame presidential Critic dies off in Lwanda Village.

Robert Kabera, a 50-year-old former Rwandan army sergeant major and prominent critic of President Paul Kagame, was found beheaded in Uganda over the weekend of October 17–18, 2026.

According to statements released by Ugandan Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, local residents discovered his decapitated body in Luwala village, located on the outskirts of Kampala. Investigators estimate the murder took place between the night of October 16 and the early morning of October 17, 2026. As of police briefings, his head has not yet been recovered.

Background and Key Details

  • Exile to Uganda: He fled Rwanda several years ago and sought asylum in Uganda, citing political persecution after Rwandan authorities leveled sexual assault allegations against him, which he strongly denied.
  • Circumstances of Death: His family noted that before his disappearance, he had traveled to inspect a construction site approximately 45 kilometers outside of Kampala.
Current Status and Regional Tensions
No suspects have been publicly identified, and the Rwandan government has not issued an official comment regarding the incident.
The case has drawn sharp scrutiny from opposition groups and human rights observers. Reports from Al Jazeera and the BBC highlight that the killing has reignited long-standing concerns regarding the safety of exiled Rwandan dissidents, following historical cases of Kagame critics being targeted abroad. Kabera’s widow, Jeanne d'Arc Rwigema Uwizeye, has publicly expressed profound fear for her and her children's safety following the murder
