The Ugandan government has banned mass long-distance foot pilgrimages and cancelled the national 2026 Martyrs' Day celebrations at Namugongo due to an Ebola outbreak.
President Yoweri Museveni and the National Epidemic Response Task Force, in coordination with religious bodies like the Uganda Episcopal Conference, implemented these strict measures to safeguard public health against the highly infectious Bundibugyo Ebola virus strain, which was imported from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Scaled-Down Prayers: At the Namugongo Catholic Shrine, any permitted prayers are strictly confined inside the church premises under rigid health guidelines, entirely closing off the lake area where crowds typically gather.
Local Parish Observance: Christian leadership has urged all faithful to observe Martyrs' Day spiritually from their respective local parishes or homes.
