Parliamnet approved a solar-powered irrigation scheme UGX.720 billion Shillings ) loan.

On June 10, 2026, the Parliament of Uganda approved a EUR 168.9 million (about UGX 720 billion) loan for Phase II of the Solar Powered Irrigation Systems Project. The funding is sourced from United Kingdom Export Finance (UKEF) and Citi Bank.


Project Goals

Coffee Production: The primary goal is to boost coffee yields and quality.

Climate Resilience: It reduces farmer reliance on unpredictable rain-fed agriculture.

Rural Incomes: The project aims to significantly increase household earnings.

Project Details

Systems Installed: The loan will establish 427 solar-powered irrigation systems nationwide.

Land Covered: The infrastructure will irrigate approximately 4,768 acres.

Beneficiaries: It directly targets more than 2,500 farming households.

Parliamentary Context

Heated Debate: The motion passed despite objections from some lawmakers who questioned the rising national debt and the performance of Phase I.

Rule Suspension: Parliament bypassed normal committee reviews due to urgency, as some committees were not yet constituted.
