Uganda has launched the multi-million-dollar construction of Kidepo International Airport in Karenga District to boost tourism and trade in the remote Karamoja sub-region. Funded by the United Arab Emirates (UAE)'s Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the $72 million project will dramatically improve global access to Kidepo Valley National Park.
Key Project Details
Funding & Cost: The massive $72 million project is fully funded by the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Massive Runway: The airport will feature a 3.6-kilometer runway (Code 4E standard) capable of handling large, wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 777.
Job Creation: The construction phase has already employed over 1,600 Ugandans, bringing immediate economic benefits to the local communities.
Modern Terminals: The design includes large spaces for both passenger and cargo terminals to support international trade.
Impact on Tourism
Easier Travel: It will drastically reduce travel time for international tourists who previously had to endure long, grueling road trips or rely on smaller, limited airfields.
Increased Visitors: Improved air connectivity is expected to significantly boost the number of visitors to one of Uganda's most remote and pristine wildlife reserves. [1]
Attracts Investors: The airport signals a new era for Karamoja's economy, attracting foreign investment for high-end luxury lodges and hospitality hubs directly inside and around the park.
