The Government of Uganda has ordered the emergency evacuation of its citizens from South Africa following a deadly surge in xenophobic protests and anti-migrant violence. President Yoweri Museveni directed the multi-agency operation after one Ugandan national was killed in KwaZulu-Natal Province. Vigilante groups issued an unofficial June 30, 2026, deadline for foreign nationals to leave.
Evacuation Details and Special Flights
Government Funding: The Ugandan government will fully cover all costs for the evacuation exercise.
Charter Flights: Uganda Airlines will operate special charter flights to repatriate citizens.
Registrations: At least 746 Ugandans have voluntarily registered for evacuation, with numbers rising rapidly.
Deceased Repatriation: Government agencies are arranging to bring home the body of the deceased citizen.
Action Plan for Ugandans in South Africa
The operation is being coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office of the Prime Minister, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Affected citizens must follow these steps to secure safe passage:
Register Immediately: Contact and register with the Uganda High Commission in Pretoria.
Move to Assembly Centres: Relocate to designated safe assembly centres setup in Durban, Pretoria, Johannesburg, and Cape Town.
Travel Documentation: The government will issue emergency travel documents at assembly points for those missing papers.
Stay Indoors: Acting Foreign Affairs Minister Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo has urged citizens to avoid protest hotspots and remain indoors.
Regional Response
Uganda joins several other African nations taking active measures to protect their people. Countries like Malawi, Nigeria, Ghana, and Mozambique have initiated emergency flights or voluntary repatriation programs to safeguard their nationals from the escalating violence.
