Ugandan government and police forces have strictly closed and locked the gates of the Namugongo Martyrs Shrines to block visitors and pilgrims as a public health measure to contain the current Ebola outbreak.
This visual lockdown at the physical shrines follows the official decision by President Yoweri Museveni and the Uganda Ministry of Health to postpone and call off the massive national Uganda Martyrs' Day celebrations traditionally held on June.
Status of the shrines:
Gates Closed: Police and shrine security forces have heavily locked down the entrances to both the Catholic and Anglican Namugongo Shrines.
Pilgrims Turned Away: Foot travellers and pilgrims who arrived at the gates despite earlier warnings are being actively turned back and instructed by police to return home.
Water Access Restricted: The sacred water sources at the Namugongo sites, usually drawn by millions of believers, have been fully cordoned off.
Scaled-down Services: To preserve the spiritual continuity of the day, highly restricted, small-scale services are being held inside. For instance, the Anglican site limited attendance to just 200 socially distanced guests under Archbishop Stephen Kazimba Mugalu.
