Government approves over 600 Billion shillings for Arua International Airport.

      

The African Development Bank (AfDB) Group has officially approved €155.99 million (approximately Shs 650 billion) to upgrade Arua Airport into an international-standard facility. While the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority will oversee implementation, the project is funded primarily via a loan from the AfDB rather than a direct government budget allocation. The government of Uganda will contribute €1.77 million (about Shs 7.7 billion) as an in-kind contribution.

Key Upgrade Specifications

New Runway: Construction of a 3.5-kilometre paved runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 777.

Passenger Capacity: A new passenger terminal designed to accommodate up to 700,000 travelers annually.

Cargo Operations: A cargo terminal capable of handling 25,000 tonnes of freight per year.

Support Facilities: Implementation of a new control tower, taxiways, aprons, internal access roads, and modern safety systems.
